This paper has an interesting communication from the U. 8. Kn- gineer’s office, regarding cutting trees in rivers or sloughs which will appear next week. Such disgraceful scenes as were enacted at the republican primar ies in Portland last Thursday will go a long ways toward electing Pennoyer mayor of that rotten burg. Giles B. One dollar per year will not pay for the white paper used in a weekly newspaper. Any sheet which of fers itself at that rate is surely not worth any more and surely does not expect to remain in business long. The H eadlight tried it once temporarily, but found it a losing game. This paper expects to remain a permanent fixture, pay ing its bills, and will not at tempt to compete in price with a cheap concern w here no money is invested, no experience used, and which is frequently in the hands of the sheriff for failure to pay its bills. Even a patent side paper with a small news service can't stand the 81.00 rate long. Why it couldn’t live on 81.50 per year. A legitimate newspaper with 83000 invested in it, experienced labor employed, all home print, and chuck full of news, can’t stand any 81.00 rate, and is getting n dozen 8150 subscriptions where thefil.OO concern is getting one at its China man price. The big city papers make eiiornicus sums on their ad vertising. This is why they have such cheap rates. They can af ford to give subscriptions away, and several offer to do it.
